On December 26, 2004, the most powerful earthquake in 40 years erupted under the Indian Ocean near Sumatra. The earthquake generated a large tsunami (tidal wave) that devastated the shores of Sumatra, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, South India, Thailand and other countries. Anywhere from 228,000 to 310,000 people are thought to have died as a result of the tsunami, and the count is not yet complete.
